History

A look at Asphalt Angels over the years…

  • Asphalt Angels Car Club established

The Asphalt Angels Auto Club Was established in 1957 by a Group of like minded teenage street rod enthusiasts from the Southside of Richmond.

  • Club was chartered

In 1959, the club was chartered by the National Street Rod Association, as such.

  • Asphalt Angels grew to 30 members

The club grew to have more than 30 members at which time they decided to have a rod run just outside of Richmond in 1961.

  • Rod & Custom Car Show was born

In 1962, they decided to have an indoor rod & custom car show at the state fairgrounds, but in 1963 the show was moved to the arena (at Parker field) and remained there until the arena was shut down by the city in 1986.

  • Car show moved venues

The show then moved to the Richmond Downtown Center for several years, then moved to the Showplace and remained there until Roses purchased the property in 2012.

  • Found a new home

The show was then moved to the Meadow Event Park (new state fairgrounds) were it has remained since.

Active and growing

Asphalt Angels Today

The current active membership of the Asphalt Angels Auto Club stands at 12 with an active auxiliary, and like the Marines, are always looking for "a Few Good Men".

The club has participated in many local charity rod and bike runs, soapbox derbies, teddy bear runs, and indirectly supports Wounded Warriors, Crippled Children’s Hospital, Knights of Columbus, Masons & Shrine.

Our annual Rod & Custom Car Classic Show is held each February at the Meadow Event Park in Doswell, Virginia. The Car Show is a popular event among car enthusiasts of all ages. Our show is known up and down the East Coast for its unique and unusual trophies, relaxed and laid-back atmosphere, and impartial judging.
